GAME VIEWING, TRAILS, BIRDING A roughly triangular wedge of land at the confluence of the Orange and Caledon rivers, the reserve covers 22 000 ha. Its terrain comprises rocky ridges and ravines interspersed with open plain, with Aasvoelkop rising to a peak on the eastern boundary. The plains are covered by grass and low Karoo bushes, with a variety of tree species growing on the ridges and along the river banks. Apart from small mammals that occur naturally, such a bat-eared fox, aardwolf and steenbok, many game species have been introduced. These include white rhinoceros, plains zebra, blue and black wildebeest, blesbok, springbok, kudu, eland, gemsbok, mountain reedbuck, red hartebeest and klipspringer. The birdlife is abundant, with the game birds and waterbirds associated with riverine habitats being of particular interest. Location: Extreme southern part of Free State; east of Bethulie Access: From Smithfield follow the R701 towards Bethulie, turn left towards Goedemoed for about 15 km, then take the signposted right turn to Tussen-die-Riviere. A second entrance is located off the R701 some 10 km from Bethulie. Accommodation: 6 2-bed chalets with communal ablution facilities; a camping site with full ablution facilities; and a few 'shelters' for hikers. Other facilities: Network of game-viewing roads; walking trails; picnic sites. Open: October to April (controlled game hunting takes place between May and September). Opening time: 07h00 to 18h00.
